What Is It That We Really Understand About Babies Who Cry - Pretoria Chiro?

Pretoria Chiro:: I devote a significant amount of time to determining whether or not something is suitable for newborns. One of the most important aspects of this is having an understanding of why babies cry, what it means to the parents, and what it may mean for the baby's overall health. For this week's installment of the #infoseries, Nuri from Squishy Tushy and I brainstormed a post about what exactly it is that we know about crying based on the research that's been done in the field of science.

In otherwise healthy babies, here are some facts about crying:

  1. A baby's first form of verbal communication is typically a cry.
  2. The act of crying does not have the effect of exercising the lungs. It seems that an old wives' tale suggests that parents should encourage their children to cry because it is healthy for their developing lungs. *GASP*
  3. A newborn's cries are a reflex, which means that they are automatic and not necessarily the result of a conscious process. It is a response to a stimulus, which may originate from either the external environment, such as temperature, noise, or light, or the internal environment, such as hunger, tiredness, or loneliness, etc.
  4. Sonographers, the wonderful individuals who carry out ultrasounds, are able to detect a "cry" or a respiratory gasp in a fetus as early as 20 weeks gestation. This is an astounding feat.

The first few months of parenthood are a special period for crying.

The crying that occurs in the first five months is distinct from crying that occurs later on because it is significantly more intense, more frequent, and sometimes even impossible to console. Nevertheless, this stage is coming to a close — woo hoo!

The overall amount of crying that occurs each day has a tendency to increase week by week, reaching a peak sometime during the second month, and then gradually decreasing to lower levels by the time the baby is four or five months old. Researchers consider this pattern to be a part of normal development – assuming there is no organic disease or injury present in the individual. This pattern is sometimes referred to as the "normal crying curve." According to studies, only 5% of babies diagnosed with colic can be attributed to an organic disease or injury.

They breathe in more air when babies cry. - Pretoria Chiro

Aerophagia, also known as "eating air," can be the result of prolonged crying. In the most recent installment of our #infoseries, I discussed this topic. When infants cry, they take in air, which leads to discomfort and impedes digestion. This cycle continues until the infant stops crying. They demonstrated this by taking abdominal X-rays of three-week-old babies while the babies were crying and again several minutes after the babies had stopped crying. Amazingly, the X-ray taken after the cryotherapy session revealed that the patient had swallowed an average of 360 milliliters of air.

If you are not medically trained, there is no need for you to worry if you do not know what a Valsalva manoeuvre is or what a cry is because they are basically the same thing. Essentially, it entails forcing your breath out while simultaneously closing your mouth and nose, or simply not letting your breath out at all. A similar effect is produced by crying, which is an increase in pressure in the cranium, chest, and abdomen. Short, purposeful bouts of crying may be of assistance when attempting to defecate or pass gas.

You Cannot Ruin a Baby in any Way

The idea that an infant can become spoiled if his cries are always answered is not supported by research. This is a common misconception. In point of fact, effective management of an infant's crying during the first six months of life results in reduced crying in later years.

You should arm yourself with a variety of techniques that will calm your child in case they have an episode. According to the findings of the research, crying reduction strategies frequently lose their effectiveness with repeated use.

The most effective way to stop a baby from crying is to provide them with kangaroo care. Even during painful medical procedures and the recovery process after surgery, babies do better when they are swaddled up against their mothers and held close.

Do not fret moms and dads. There is no expectation placed on you to have an instantaneous expert level understanding of why your baby is upset, what the problem is, or how to handle it. You just have to tackle each day as it comes. You are starting out on your journey as a parent at the same time that your baby is learning to navigate the world.

Chiropractors who specialize in treating infants are an invaluable resource for new parents in the first five months of their child's life. Chiropractors are able to assist parents in identifying any factors that may be contributing to their child's excessive crying as well as any pain that they may be experiencing. Several studies have shown that receiving chiropractic treatment results in less time spent crying, which is fantastic news. Therefore, if you notice that your baby may be crying because of excessive winds, pain with different postures or positions, or has difficulty latching, then you should make sure to contact us for an assessment or a referral to a chiropractor in your area as soon as possible.
